South Dakota Weekly Auction Summary For the Week Ending Jul 15, 2017

Receipts: 5,844 Last Week 6,321 Last Year 2,025

Results of: Herreid, Hub City, and Sioux Falls Regional

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 1000 lbs steady to 5.00
higher with instances seen of 6.00 to 8.00 higher, over 1000 lbs 3.00
to 4.00 lower. Feeder heifers 3.00 to 6.00 higher except those heifers
over 950 lbs 5.00 lower. Good demand for cattle to finish in the latter
part of the 4th quarter of the year as the CME Live Cattle contracts for
those back months are premium to the spot month, moderate demand for
those big heavyweight cattle that will finish late summer. Very hot
weather has prevailed for the month of July, which really affects the
performance, and mortality, of those heavy cattle. With the current
cash fed cattle market and Aug Live Cattle futures contract at roughly
118.00 there isnt a lot of incentive to buy a 1,000 or 1,100 pound
steer at last weeks prices, cattle feeders had to buy them cheaper.
A seasonally light run of feeder cattle again this week, as is normal.
Grazing conditions continue to deteriorate as the weather has been
miserably hot and very dry. Cattle producers in the driest parts of the
state are running short of grass and some yearlings are starting to come
off grass early. The futures market lent support to the cash feeder
cattle market as did the cash fed cattle market as it seemed to find
stable footing. Live basis sales came in at 118.00-121.00 and dressed
basis at 188.00-190.00. Corn futures suffered large losses, Dec corn
began the week at 4.10 but ended the week .23 lower to close at 3.87.
Corn growers in SD havent been as fortunate as growers in other regions
of the nation as the rains have been missing this area. Cattle feeders
have adjusted their sights lower and are selling their showlist according
to what the market will allow, this is evidenced by the large weekly
slaughter total. This week packers were able to kill nearly 40,000 head
more than last year, as they processed 637,000 head. With a kill this
large packers had a harder time selling the meat as the boxed beef cutout
lost over 9.00, to close the week at 209.35. The slaughter cow and bull
market started the week higher, steady to 2.00 higher for cows and 4.00
to 5.00 for the bulls. This all changed at midweek as the Breakers and
Boners were 5.00 to 8.00 lower from Monday yet Lean cows were only 1.00
lower. Bulls fell off 5.00 to 10.00 from where they were on Monday.
